Popular dog breeds that can challenge you

When people decide to take a dog home, they are often relying on the heart—or Instagram. An adorable face, droopy ears, or trendy breed can be irresistible. The reality, however, is not every trendy breed is a cinch for every living situation. At mybestie.gr, we believe responsible pet ownership begins with honesty. Some of the most sought-after breeds are actually quite difficult to manage if their requirements are not widely understood.

Why breeding choice counts

Every breed possesses instincts, heritage, and predispositions that govern its behavior. A dog is never just its looks—it's also the energy, temperament, and hereditary influences. Hunting breeds are bred to hunt, guard breeds to protect, and companion breeds to yearn for human companionship. If these urges don't align with your lifestyle, you could be in for frustration: destructive chewing, persistent barking, anxiety, or even aggression.

Dachshund – The short dog with a big personality

Dachshunds with their short stature and long bodies capture the hearts of people all over the world. Dachshunds, originally bred to dig into badger sets, are courageous, obstinate, and perpetually curious.

Difficulties: Dachshunds excessively bark, stubbornly dig, and do not obey training. Their fearlessness lands them in unsafe circumstances with larger canines at times.

Solution: Early training, brain stimulation in the form of puzzle toys, and tolerance are the key. Consistency helps to balance their obstinacy.

Cocker Spaniel – The sweet but sensitive friend

Their big eyes and smooth ears make Cocker Spaniels one of the most popular breeds. But they are not low-maintenance lapdogs.

Challenges:They need constant activity and human interaction. Most Cockers suffer from separation anxiety, and this can take the form of destructive tendencies or persistent barking. They also need high levels of grooming.

Solution: Regular exercise, interactive games, and gradual training to be independent are beneficial. Regular grooming to prevent coat and skin issues is essential.

Border Collie – The genius that never rests

Border Collies are rated as the globe's most intelligent dog breed. Their herding talent, fast focus, and endless energy place them at the top of agility and obedience competitions. But these same qualities wear out the majority of homes.

Challenges: A Border Collie in need of a "job" gets restless and upset. This typically leads to obsessive behaviors (shadow chasing, ankle nipping, or herding children), destructive chewing, and hyperactivity. Their mind is always thinking and working, and if you don't give them something to do, they will create their own—probably something you won't enjoy.

Solution: Border Collies thrive in homes where they are given daily physical and mental exercise. Long walks, advanced training, agility competitions, or puzzle feeding keep them under control. Without human interaction, they become too powerful to handle.

When popularity doesn't equal compatibility

Polarizing breeds on Instagram or in movies will fool new owners. It's not sufficient that a breed is cute or popular; it won't fit into every lifestyle. Sadly, shelters are filled with dogs whose needs exceeded what their families provided.

What to consider before bringing home a dog

  • Your lifestyle: Do you have time for exercise, play, and training?
  • Your home: Apartment or house with yard? Neighbor noise tolerance?
  • Your personality: Structured and routine-loving, or more of a free spirit?
  • Your budget: Food, vet bills, grooming, and training all quickly add up.

Dachshunds, Cocker Spaniels, and Border Collies are great dogs—but they're not for everybody. Each requires time, patience, and understanding to thrive. Choosing the correct breed is not about riding every bandwagon that comes along, but about choosing a partner that will complement your life. With the right preparation, even the most "difficult" dog will be the most rewarding best friend.
