Dog training: How to choose the right method for your dog

Dog training is one of the best things a pet owner can possibly do. We at mybestie.gr know that proper training not only makes everyday life easier, but it also enhances the bond between you and your dog. With all the training methods and techniques out there, the challenge is to decide which one will be most suitable to your dog's temperament, needs, and lifestyle.

Why training matters

Training is not just a question of demonstrating commands like "stay" or "sit." It helps to create communication, trust, and security for your dog and for the people that surround it. A trained dog is permitted to be more independent, as owners feel secure with them to take them out to public places or social gatherings.

When should training begin?

Experts agree that training should begin early, ideally between 8 to 16 weeks when the puppy is most receptive, curious, and open to learning. However, it's never too late or too soon. Even adult dogs may be trained with patience and persistence.

Types of dog training

1. Basic obedience training

This is the foundation of all dogs. It is composed of simple commands such as "sit," "stay," "come," and "down." They make life simpler and prevent potential dangerous accidents, such as a dog crossing the street.

2. Socialization training

Especially practical in Greece, where pets easily interact with people in cafes, parks, or even beaches. Socialization teaches dogs to react calmly when they encounter other animals, children, and strangers, reducing aggression and fear.

3. Crate and house training

Instructs dogs as to when and where to have an "accident," and allows for a safe "den" feeling in the house.

4. Guard and protection training

Certain types of dogs, mostly bigger ones, can be trained to guard property or protect family members. This must be accomplished by a very proficient trainer since bad training will produce violent and unsafe responses.

5. Service and assistance training

Other times, dogs are trained to assist people with disabilities, such as leading the blind or acting as emotional support animals.

6. Specialized skills training

Training can also focus on specialized talents that a dog is naturally good for, ranging from sports and agility to search-and-rescue or therapy dogs.

Training methods: Which one is right?

  • Positive reinforcement
  • Treats, toys, or praise that are delivered as a reward when the dog is displaying the desired behavior. Proven scientifically to be one of the best and most humane methods.

  • Clicker training
  • A type of positive reinforcement that involves a click noise delivered as a marker signal for desirable behavior. Negative, specific, and wonderful at creating clear communication.

  • Balanced training
  • Along with corrections. It is applied by some trainers in Greece, but it must be carried out sensitively to avoid stress or fear.

  • Model-rival or mirror training
  • In this method, the dog observes a “model” (either a human or another animal) performing the desired behavior and receiving a reward. Through observation and a sense of competition — “if I do the same, I’ll get the reward too” — the dog learns faster.

Choosing the right trainer

Dog training services in Greece vary, so careful choice is crucial. The professional trainer should:

  • Use humane, science-based methods.
  • Offer clear communication and transparency regarding techniques.
  • Modify the program to fit your dog's breed, age, and temperament.
  • Encourage owner involvement, as training needs to be continued at home.
  • Always read reviews, request certifications, and if possible, visit a class prior to committing.

Every dog is different, and there is no one method of training them all. By starting out early, choosing the right kind of training, and having a pro in your corner, you'll ensure that your dog grows up to be a happy, confident, and well-adjusted pal. Training to us at mybestie.gr is more than obedience—it's learning how to build a lifetime bond of respect, trust, and affection with your dog.
