Dogs & cold weather: Winter safety tips and sensitive breeds

Even winter can be very pretty, but the low temperatures sometimes become difficult, not to say hazardous, for our beloved dogs. There are dog breeds that prefer low temperatures, but others are highly sensitive to low temperatures. At mybestie.gr, we want all dog owners to be informed about the impact of winter on their dog.

How cold is too cold for dogs?

Cold Hardiness: How well an individual tolerates the cold depends on breed characteristics, size, age, fur thickness, the amount of fat on the body, and health. Small dogs, puppies, older dogs, and dogs with thick coats are more susceptible than others to the effects of exposure to extreme cold.

As a general rule:

  • Below 7°C (45°F), it is certainly uncomfortable for most dogs
  • Less than 0°C (32°F)*could be harmful, particularly with wind or wet conditions

Breeds that are sensitive to cold weather

These dogs lose body warmth easily and must never be let outside in the winter:

Such dogs require coats, sweaters, and short walks in sub-zero temperatures.

Some popular cold-tolerant dog breeds

Some dogs have natural adaptations to survive in cold conditions because of their dense double coats and robust bodies:

  • Siberian Husky
  • Alaskan Malam
  • Samoyet
  • Bernese Mountain Dog
  • Akita
  • Saint Bernard

Even these breeds, however, require housing, dry fur, and proper care.

Signs your dog may be too cold

Be alert for these danger signals while taking winter walks:

  • Shivering or trembling
  • Raising the paws from the ground
  • Whining or Anxiety
  • Slow movement or lethargy
  • Cold ears, tail, and paws

If you recognize these symptoms, get indoors immediately.

How to protect your dog in cold weather

In colder climates, dogs must:

  • Adjust walks: Short walks, taken more frequently, are safer than longer walks. Avoid ice and strong winds.
  • Use dog clothing: Jackets and sweaters are not fashion, but protection. Waterproof jackets are best for rainy or snowy weather.
  • Protect paws: Cold pavement, ice, or road salt can damage paws. Put dog boots on or paw balm before going for walks, and clean paws after.
  • Keep them dry: Wet fur causes increased heat loss. It is always important to dry your dog after a rainy and snowy season.
  • Never leave dogs outside balconies, backyards, or garage areas: Trey are re not safe when the mercury drops to freezing.
  • Nutrition modification: Certain breeds of dog may use more calories during winter months. It's a good idea to check with your vet about whether a slight increase in diet is required.

Indoors during winter cold climates also mean fewer activities, leading to boredom. Mental engagement, indoor games, and socialization are very crucial, particularly for dogs who have long hours alone at home. If you happen to be away due to your job or other travels, reputable pet sitters at mybestie.gr are available to make sure your dog feels warm, active, and emotionally supported in its environment.

Winter brings different challenges for dog, however, being prepared can make the world of difference. It is essential to be aware of your dog’s breed and ability in order to safeguard them against the potential dangers that come with winter. With care and precautions, your dog can have an enjoyable winter experience.
